He attended the Académie Julian in the early twentieth century, before taking part in the Salon des Indépendants. In 1907, he exhibited his famous portrait of symbolist poet Émile Verhaeren in a red frock coat. He also designed posters, theater costumes and ceramics for the Manufacture de Sèvres.
On the back, labels from the 37th Exhibition of the Société des Artistes Indépendants, held from March 20 to May 2, 1926, at the Palais de Bois / Porte Maillot (page 304 of the exhibition catalog).
