Pierre BODARD (1881-1937) Samson et Dalila Oil on canvas. 205 x 167 cm Wooden frame and gilded stucco. 187.5 x 168 cm Material defects, tear lower right.
This painting was executed in 1913 at the Villa Medici during the stay of P.Bodard (1st Grand Prix de Rome 1909). As it was a boarder's "envoi", the painting was first shown to the public in May 1913 at the Villa Medici during the exhibition inaugurated by the Queen of Italy, then in Paris in June and July of the same year at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris.
This painting meets the requirements of the regulations in force at the time for second-year boarders, who were required to execute "a painting of at least two nude or partially draped figures of natural size" (1905 regulations cited by Mme France Lechleiter).
