Dutch Golden Age engraving with etching "St. Bavo," from the series "Saints of North and South Netherlands," by Pieter Claesz Soutman (1593-1601 - 1657), a Dutch painter and printmaker from Haarlem. Engraved in 1650 by Cornelis Visscher (Dutch, 1628/29 - 1658). Saint Bavo is depicted dressed in knight's armor and ermine robe, with falcon and sword. Saint Bavo of Ghent is a Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox saint. He was the son of Pepin of Landen and the brother of saints Begga and Gertrude of Nivelles. Note: Cornelis Visscher belonged to a family of Dutch engravers and printers, it began with Jan Claessen (Cornelius' grandfather) and continued with Jansz Claes (1686-1652), Cornelis' father. He engraved with burin and etching, especially by Italian masters of the 17th century, from Rubens, Van Ostade, Van Laer and Berchem. In 1649-1650, he collaborated with P. Soutman and operated in Antwerp. An identical engraving is a part of the Metropolitan Museum collection of the Drawings and Prints Department. Dimensions: Engraving: 12 5/8 x 17 in., (32 x 43 cm.) Image is in very good condition overall. Signs of age throughout. Horizontal hole in the middle right of the image. A small hole in writing at the bottom. Frame in perfect condition.
