A famous animal painter, Rosa Bonheur was also renowned for her sculptures, which she produced until the 1850s. Trained by her father and Léon Cogniet, she was particularly fond of domestic animals seen at fairs. The vast majority of her sculptures were produced in bronze by the founder Hippolyte Peyrol (1856-1929), husband of Juliette Bonheur, the artist's younger sister.
