DIPTYCH REPRESENTING KINGS MANASSÉ AND EZÉCHIAS, WORK OF THE 19th CENTURY FROM AN ENGRAVING BY LUCAS DE LEYDE
Two panels composed of engraved bone plates monogrammed CA or AC in a cartouche in the manner of Dürer in the lower center of the left plate. Framed in gilded and engraved wood with a later period checkerboard motif.
Diptych representing the kings Manasseh and Hezekiah, 19th century work, after an engraving by Lucas of Leiden
Lucas of Leiden (c.1494-1566) is considered, alongside Albrecht Dürer, one of the greatest engravers of the early 16th century in Northern Europe. He is known to have produced some 200 engravings, mostly in burin, between 1508 and 1530. Among the best-known is a suite of four engravings used as models for these panels, depicting the twelve kings of Israel from the Old Testament, grouped in threes, on horseback and wearing sumptuous costumes and headdresses.
