LARGE BOX, FLANDERS, ANTWERP, 17th CENTURY
in vermilion-tinted tortoiseshell veneer and decorated with gilded brass repoussé plaques. This rectangular, slightly domed box is made of Caret tortoiseshell veneer on all sides, with rectangular tortoiseshell moldings on the lid. Each corner is decorated with fan-shaped plaques featuring flowering branches and birds. The domed top of the box is adorned with an oval medallion of the same design. A pull ring and rosette open the box. The keyhole is in a cartouche. Inside, at the bottom, a color engraving depicting Aurora and Cephalus, reflected in a mirror under the lid.
