Gabriel Viardot (1830-1904)
Listed as a woodcarver around 1860, Gabriel Viardot went on to manage the family business: "a furniture, fancy goods and carved wood factory". He took part in the Universal Exhibitions of 1867, 1878 and 1889, where he was awarded a gold medal. Known as the "creator of furniture in the Chinese and Japanese style", he adapted exotic forms to European taste, adorning his furniture with mother-of-pearl inlays, lacquer panels and bronzes. A certain success earned him a request for exclusivity on six of his models from the Escalier de Cristal store.
