ATTRIBUTED TO GABRIEL VIARDOT (1830-1904), BASSE BIBLIOTHÈQUE POUVANT FORMER JARDINIÈRE, SECOND HALF OF THE 19th CENTURY rectangular, in natural wood inlaid with gold fillets and gilt bronze, with two trays with compartments and boxes opening with a flap and a leaf. The uprights are decorated with dragons in fall, and terminate in set-back feet protected at the front by a claw hoof. It is topped by a pediment with an openwork décor of Chinese motifs, centered on a fantastic animal mask with flowering branches. The top features a removable tray to reveal the planter. Gabriel Viardot (1830-1904) Listed as a woodcarver around 1860, Gabriel Viardot went on to manage the family business: "a furniture, fancy goods and carved wood factory". He took part in the Universal Exhibitions of 1867, 1878 and 1889, where he was awarded a gold medal. Known as the "creator of furniture in the Chinese and Japanese style", he adapted exotic forms to European taste, adorning his furniture with mother-of-pearl inlays, lacquer panels and bronzes. A certain success earned him a request for exclusivity on six of his models from the Escalier de Cristal store.
