Lidded jar, Japan, Satsuma ceramics, Meiji dynasty, 19th century.
The ivory to cream-coloured clay used as the base material is typical of ceramics from the province of Satsuma. Cobalt blue glaze, gold decoration. Depiction of two women, presumably peasant women as they are not wearing make-up, in a rural setting. One of the women is carrying her small child tied to her back, the other woman is leading her older child by the hand.
Stamped signature on the base next to a hand-drawn signature.
Diameter 8.5 cm, height 5 cm.
