SUISSE, époque de l'Empire français Small pink gold (750) snuffbox, rectangular in shape with rounded corners, with chased decoration on all sides, of reserves with shimmering wavy bands in frieze frames of foliage or leaves or fillets; the uprights decorated with laurel branches. Hinged lid. Numbered 2872 on the rabbet. Traces of Swiss hallmarks, notably that of the 3rd Title [P.3.G. in an oval] of GENEVA and that of the silversmith [B.?. C]. The rabbet shows the French hallmarks, applied during the 1798 annexation of the canton of Geneva, for the period 1809-1815, de 3ème Titre [coq] and de grosse garantie [main de justice - n° 46 for GENEVE]. Repunched in FRANCE in a city in the northeastern division with the petite Recense [tour] hallmark, between 1819 and 1838, and finally with the tête d'Aigle. Weight: 53.2 g. - 16 x 61 x 41 mm. A few scratches and small knocks from use, small dents on a corner of the lid and on the back. The goldsmith's hallmark, very faded, resembles that of MOULINIE, BAUTTE & Compagnie [M.B.&.C.], an association active from 1804 to 1808 in Geneva. During the period when the canton of Geneva was annexed to the French Empire, the city of Geneva became the capital of the French department of Léman, and applied French legislation on precious metals, using the regulatory title and guarantee hallmarks, in addition to its own hallmarks.
