GIRONDE. Set of 27 autograph letters signed by Bertrand Barthe. La Réole prison, July 1812 to May 1813. Approx. 45 pp. in-4. Address.
Bertrand Barthe, incarcerated for debts, writes to M. Merlet, Mayor of Clérac, asking him to plead his case with his creditor, M. Dasque. At the end of the correspondence, on May 21 1813, after a year and a half's imprisonment, the creditor agreed to a settlement of 1,500 francs on his children's guarantee.
Prison for debt was abolished in 1867. It remained in place only in the form of judicial restraint, which concerned only debts owed to the State.
