[Engraving]. [Normandy, Rouen]. [View of Rouen in 1525].
Lithograph in bistre on 3 assembled leaves, colored with gouache. [Rouen, 1911?]. 54 x 121 cm. à vue (stains). Under glass, antique wooden frame.
A rare and spectacular representation of the city of Rouen in the 16th century. It reproduces a painting produced around 1525, which accompanied an important historical manuscript still preserved in the Rouen library, the Livre enchaîné, or Livre des fontaines de Rouen, by Jacques Le Lieur.
Around 1840, the erudite artist Théodore de Jolimont rediscovered and restored this painting, and published representations of it accompanied by a historical study.
We believe this was done in Rouen in 1911, to accompany a new publication offering a facsimile of the manuscript, prepared by Abbé Victor Sanson.
