[Korea]. [Art and archaeology]. KOMIYA (Mihomatsu). [Riwoke Hakubutsukwan Shozohin Shashin-jo = Catalogue of the Prince Yi Museum]. Seoul, Prince Li Museum, 1912. 3 volumes in-folio, unpaginated, illustrated gilt publisher's boards, purple ties, labels (some spines split, a few freckles).
Rare first edition of the catalog of the collections of the Prince Yi Museum in Korea. It comprises 695 black photogravures of works, captioned in Korean on their original serpents (on the plate there is also a general caption in English).
Established in 1907, by 1912 the museum housed over 12,000 pieces: sculptures, ceramics, paintings, textiles and numerous Korean objects. Intended to promote Korea and its arts abroad, the book contains a preface, introduction and table of contents in English. The introduction contains a history of the four eras of Korean art, from the Three Kingdoms to the Yi dynasty, then reigned by Emperor Sunjong. With its history and typological classification, this catalog is the first attempt at a history of ancient Korean art.
