In-folio, XXXII copper-engraved plates, including the title with the author's portrait, modest blue boards circa 1800 (spine uncovered, edges and corners worn; soiling not severe, 6 plates stained).
Rare first edition of this famous and seminal book; this is the second state, identifiable by added words on some plates, justified by the author in 5 lines added at the bottom of the epistle to the reader (f. III).
The stains, sustained on 3 plates, are of the same rusty hue as those found on the digitized copy in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek (https://www.digitale-sammlungen.de/en/view/bsb10862998?page=12,13 ).
