[Addendum]. The first marbled endpaper is missing, but long gone; the back cover is covered with white paper bearing an early handwritten note.
[Binding with arms]. DU FAY (abbé). Manière de fortifier selon la methode de monsieur de Vauban... À Paris, chez la Vve de J.B. Coignard, 1681 [i.e. 1691?]. In-12, [4] f., 185 p., [5] f., contemporary red morocco, 5-ribbed spine, gilt title, compartments decorated with gilt fillets and coat-of-arms, triple gilt fillet framing the boards, gilt coat-of-arms at the corners, large gilt coat-of-arms in the center, gilt roulette at the necks, headpieces and endpapers, gilt edges (2 corners rubbed, browning).
Rare first edition.
The privilege is dated March 29, 1691, and the approval given by Vauban himself is dated Paris, March 2, 1691.
The illustration consists of a folding copper-engraved plan hors-texte, two copper-engraved vignettes at the head of the page, one of which is signed J. Mariette, and numerous wood-engraved geometrical figures in the text.
A very fine tribute copy bearing the arms of the Le Prestre de Vauban family.
Two old handwritten bookplates on the endpapers, one "Gouyon", the other crossed out.
