[BRISEUX (Charles-Étienne)]; JOMBERT (Charles-Antoine). Architecture moderne, ou l'art de bien bâtir... A Paris, chez C. Jombert, 1764. 2 vol. in-4, contemporary mottled havana calf, 5-rib spine, fawn title and giblets, ornate caissons, red edges (headbands uncovered, spine of t.1 split and worn, with central sections out of order, a few marginal defects including cracks in the margins of a few pages (t.1), small ink stains on 2 pages, one in the margin (t.1), discreet soiling on page 48 (t.2) and stain on page 130 of t.2). Last and most complete edition, established and enlarged by the bookseller C.-A. Jombert, of this treatise by the architect Briseux, which first appeared in 1728. According to the notice written by Jombert himself, "2nd ed. increased by two" (Quérard, France litt., IV, 1830, p. 241). The illustration consists of 2 frontispieces, 7 vignettes, 1 cul-de-lampe, 152 plates, all engraved on copper. The architect and decorator Charles-Etienne Briseux (1680-1754) published several theoretical and practical works on aesthetics and architecture, and built several châteaux in the provinces; he is also credited with the Hôtel d'Augny, which now houses the town hall of the 9th arrondissement of Paris (Berlin Kat. 2398).
