[PHILIPON (Charles, ed.). La caricature politique, morale, littéraire et scénique. Paris, [Impr. Dezauche (text) ; Aubert (lith.)], 1830-1835. 10 volumes in-folio, post-19th c. navy blue half-chagrin, smooth spine decorated with a set of gilt irons at head and tail, bordered with double fillet and stippling, with comic mask as central finial, title, tomaison, rade, all gilt, gilt fillet to boards, ordinary rubbing to spines and headpieces; interior defects including wetness). Rare complete collection of all 251 issues of this famous satirical review, the most admirable of the critical publications issued under the July Monarchy. "One of the most interesting works of the 1830 period, it is a precious collection of caricatures on the era of Louis-Philippe" (Carteret). Among the illustrators are Daumier and Grandville, who each contributed around a hundred plates, as well as Monnier, Raffet and Traviès. Charles Philipon is the author of some of the drawings, but above all of the texts; Victor Hugo and Balzac also made contributions. This copy contains all the required plates, numbered from 1 to 524 (with some double plates bearing 2 nos., some miscalculations), over a hundred of which are in color; in addition, there are 3 unnumbered plates (between nos. 46 and 56). without number (between nos. 46 and 47, and between 56 and 57), as well as a portrait of Berard perhaps added between nos. 146 and 147; 2 plates are in 2 copies: nos. 154-155 ("Singeries") and 328-29; of course, it contains the reputedly rare plate 19, the fold-out Anniversary plate, etc. The text is printed on brown paper, with the exception of a few pages in volumes I and II, possibly reprinted at the time. The copy contains two of the rare supplements described by Carteret (in vol. II, after no. 30; in vol. V, "Théâtre des folies politiques"). It also contains 4 very rare table leaves out of the 9 published (t.3, 6, 7 and 9). Each volume - except 8 - is preceded by a cover page. Provenance: Robert de Billy (1869-1953), French ambassador and close friend of Marcel Proust (bookplate); Daniel Appia (bookplate). (Carteret III, 111 sq.).
