Gilt frame
PROVENANCE
Emilian private collection
The canvas, depicts Anne of Habsburg-Austria (Cigales, 1549-Badajoz, 1580), queen of Spain and Portugal. The eldest daughter of Emperor Maximilian II of Habsburg and Maria of Habsburg, she was the niece of Charles V. In 1570 she married her uncle, Philip II of Habsburg-Spain, who two years earlier had been widowed by Elisabeth of Valois, mother of the Duchess of Savoy Catherine Micaela, and lacked male heirs for succession to the Madrid throne. The painting presented here, as per Prof. Marco Tanzi's communication, has numerous stylistic affinities with the works of the painter Sofonisba Anguissola, a great portrait painter of the period
