SOMOFF Constantin Alexïévitch (1869-1939)
Country landscape in autumn.
Gouache and graphite on cardboard, signed lower right in Latin letters by the artist in black ink "C. Somof, avril 1929", preserved under glass in a modern gilded frame. Identified on the reverse: "Grandvilliers, 1929, 1er avril (Danville, Eure)". Good condition.

Biography: Constantin Alexïévitch Somoff was a symbolist painter, draughtsman and book illustrator. From 1888 to 1897, he studied at the Higher Art Institute of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts with Vasily Verechtchagin (1842-1904) and Pavel Tchistiakoff (1832-1919), and in 1894 joined Ilya Répine's studio. From 1897 to 1899, he worked in Colarossi's studio in Paris. He became an academician in 1913 and a member of Le Monde de l'Art in 1899, and of the Union of Russian Artists from 1903 to 1910. He died in Paris.
Provenance: Collection of the artist, then offered by him to Boris Snejkovsky (1910-1978), preserved by descent before being sold at Christie's in London on June 4, 2018 under no. 8.
