ILLE-ET-VILAINE (35) - "St Servan (St Malo). View of the Port from the Pointe de la Cité". 19th century. Preparatory pencil drawing on wove paper, with numerous indications in the artist's hand, making comparisons with other drawings he had made... "My old view of St Servan was, it seems to me, the prettiest view of this town, and I didn't think it necessary to make another one. I only increased the 1st plan on the left, in order to have the grandeur of my large views. I have revised this entire view. My old drawing must be adjusted here in the AAA corner. I did the same for St Malo... [...]". On the upper edge, in brown ink, "see the costumes on the back of this drawing". On verso, drawings of various headdresses, including that of Dinart & Cancale. Provenance: Fonds of the Charpentier workshop run by Pierre-Henri (1788-1854) and his son Henri-Désiré (1806-1883), printers and publishers based in Paris, then Nantes (from 1854). 28 x 40.3 cm. Condition B (some stains and foxing, traces and rare handling creases).
