After Giovanni Battista Crespi, called Il Cerano,
Italian 1573-1632-
Saint Francis in Ecstasy;
oil on canvas, 99.5 x 67 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work is a version of Crespi's depiction of Saint Francis, currently held by the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan [no.4970], with some variations. Crespi was a significant force in Milanese Counter-Reformation painting, often depicting religious subjects with realism and humanity, which imparts his works with a particular potency and emotive charge.
