Italian School,
late 19th century-
Madonna Vergine Ausiliatrice;
oil on canvas, 65.5 x 55.5 cm.
Provenance:
Property from a European Private Collection.
Note:
The present composition appears to be a later copy after the 'Madonna Vergine Ausiliatrice' in the Church of San Marco in Rovereto, Trentino, with minor variations, particularly the crowns worn by Madonna and Child. Madonna Vergine Ausiliatrice, or Mary, Help of Christians, is the patron saint of the city of Rovereto, and another fresco in the same church depicts the consecration of the city to the Saint. The Church of San Marco is also notable for its remarkable 16th-century organ, on which Mozart (1756-1791) performed his first public concert in Italy on 26 December 1769.
