Philips Galle after Jan van der Straet, called Stradanus,
Flemish 1537-1612 and 1523-1605-
Staphae, Sive Stapedes;
engraving on laid paper, 19.7 x 26.7 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
This print is from Stradanus's 'Nova Reperta', dating from between 1580 and 1605, which documents key discoveries and developments of the 'modern' world, as opposed to Classical antiquity. The present scene depicts the invention of the stirrup. In this plate, Stradanus has shown stirrups being produced in workshops to the right of the composition, and offered to figures who mount their horses to the centre of the scene.
