Note:
The present work is a version after Wissing's portrait of William III (1650-1702) in the Royal Collection [RCIN 405644]. That portrait was one of a pair depicting the Prince and Princess of Orange (1662-1694), later William III and Mary II, commissioned by Mary's father, James II (1633-1701) in 1685.
