Lieve Pietersz. Verschuier,
Dutch c.1630-1686-
Sailing barges off the coast with figures standing on the shore;
oil on panel, 42.8 x 55.6 cm.
Provenance:
with Hal O'Nians Gallery, London, where purchased in 1973.
Private Collection.
Note:
Verschuier was a Rotterdam-born painter who was recorded as being in Amsterdam in 1651, where is it believed that he may have studied under the marine painter Simon de Vlieger (c.1601-1653). He travelled to Rome in 1653, where he befriended artists such as Willem Drost (1633-1659) and Johann Carl Loth (1632-1698), before returning to the Netherlands, settling in Rotterdam in 1667. The sense of calm that pervades the present composition, which features boats bobbing gently on placid waters, stands in striking contrast with the tumultuous naval battle scenes which make up much of Verschuier's output, such as the examples held in the collection of the Royal Maritime Museum [BHC1675, BHC0849, and BHC0288].
