Agasse was one of the pre-eminent animal painters of the 19th century, with his subjects ranging from more domestic creatures, such as dogs and horses, to exotic animals, including lions and tigers, antelopes, and quaggas, alongside his depiction of cows, goats, and sheep, as in the present work.
Asbjorn Lunde (1927-2017) was a prominent lawyer, philanthropist, and art collector. Lunde donated works to several institutions, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Francis and Sterling Clarke Art Institute, and The National Gallery of Australia.
