Circle of Jacques-Louis David, French 1748-1825- Portrait of a gentleman, thought to be Luc-Antoine Donin de Rosière de Champagneux; black chalk on paper, inscribed 'portrait / De Monsieur Luc Antoine de Rosière de Champagn... / beau père de M elle Cutor...? Roland' in ink and further pencil inscribed 'appartenant ... madame Albest Marion [?]' verso, bears label for Alphonse Giroux et Cie, tondo, diameter 10.5 cm. Note: The present portrait may depict the lawyer and journalist Luc-Antoine de Champagneux (1744-1807), who was the founder of the patriotic journal "Le Courrier de Lyon". De Champagneux is best remembered for his association with the French Revolutionary activist, salonnière, and writer Madame Marie-Jeanne Roland de la Platière (1754-1793), known as 'Madame Roland'. On her imprisonment and before her eventual execution Madame Roland is thought to have entrusted her memoirs to De Champagneux, whom she considered a close friend.
