The present work is a copy after Greuze's original, which sold at Christie's, New York, on 31 October 2017 (lot 30), which had originally been in the collection of Jeanne Bécu, comtesse du Barry (1743-1793). The composition is a typically sensual portrait of a languid female figure, gazing away from the viewer and seemingly lost in thought.
