After Sir Thomas Lawrence, PRA FRS,
British 1769-1830-
Portrait of William Lock as a child, full-length, with a dog;
oil on cradled panel, 40.5 x 29.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work appears is a copy after Lawrence's original, which was painted in 1814 and exhibited at the Royal Academy in the same year, and which sold at Christie's, London, on 7 July 2022 (lot 35). The portrait depicts William Lock III (1804-1832), the grandson of William Lock (1732-1810) who was himself one of Lawrence's most important patrons. Indeed, three generations of the family (William Lock, William Lock II (1767-1847), and William Lock III) all sat for Lawrence, their portraits spanning the course of the artist's career.
