oil on canvas, bears a partial printed label inscribed 'John Hoppner R.A. / Portrait of Emma Burward / Sister to Lady Poole and / Harry Cooke. From the Collection / of Mrs Til...[?]' attached to the upper stretcher bar,76.1 x 62.8 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present portrait, depicting a lady in a crisp white costume seated against a dramatic wooded backdrop, very much recalls Hoppner's oeuvre. Indeed, the present work bears a strong resemblance to Hoppner's 'Portrait of a Lady' which was offered at Sotheby's, London, on 12 June 2003 (lot 66), particularly in the loose treatment of the sitter's turban and dress, and the striking contrast between the brightness of the sitter's costume, and the darkness of the background beyond. Similar features are also evident in Hoppner's 'Portrait of the Hon. Mary Rycroft' which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 10 July 1996 (lot 62).
