Circle of John Opie, RA,
British 1761-1807-
Portrait of a lady wearing a lace bonnet;
oil on canvas, oval, bears old label for 'W. Freeman & Son Ltd.' attached to the stretcher, 32.9 x 25.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The sitter's clothing dates the present work to the late 18th century, with her elaborate ribboned lace bonnet and curled, powdered hair recalling the costume of a portrait attributed to Opie in the collection of the V&A [47/1955]. The artist's technique in the present work is reminiscent of that Opie's approach, as in a similarly loosely-handled portrait of John Burgess in the City of Westminster Archive Centre [P059].
