Attributed to Thomas Rowlandson, British 1757-1827- Crowds on the Somerset House Terrace, with the York Buildings Water Tower beyond; pen, brown ink, and watercolour on paper, 19.5 x 26 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: The banks of the river Thames were a frequent subject for celebrated caricaturist Thomas Rowlandson. Similar works include his view of Cheyne Walk [Museum of London, A23094] and of Putney Bridge [Morgan Library and Museum, New York, 1954.25]. The tall, needle-like structure in the background is the York Buildings Waterworks' Water Tower, a wooden tower which was built during the 17th century and remained a dominant feature of London’s skyline well into the 19th century.
