Edward William Cooke, RA,
British 1811-1880-
Palermo Cathedral;
pencil on paper, 24.8 x 17.8 cm.
Provenance:
with the Fry Gallery, London.
Note:
Cooke was the son of the engraver George Cooke (1781-1834), and was undoubtedly influenced by the approach of his father's friends, including figures such as Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (1793-1867) and David Roberts (1796-1864), and by James Stark (1794-1859) under whom he studied. Cooke travelled widely across Europe and North Africa, producing evocative architectural and landscape sketches, of which the present work is a classic example.
