Circle of Charles Knighton Warren,
British 1856-1893-
Portrait of an Egyptian woman;
oil on canvas, 50.7 x 37.9 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present painting is highly reminiscent of the work of Charles Knighton Warren, who was celebrated for his Orientalist scenes, often depicting figures in somewhat fanciful costume, evoking a North African location by setting them against a background of hieroglyphs or Moorish architecture. Like the present scene, Warren's paintings are generally imbued with a powerful sense of stillness, with figures seemingly lost in contemplation, looking away from the viewer. Indeed, the subject matter, composition, and treatment of the present work very much recall Warren's painting of an 'Egyptian Musician', which is held in the collection of the Sunderland Museum [TWCMS : B2524].
