Alexander Nyulassy,
Slovakian 1840-1903-
Portrait of a lady, half-length, with blonde hair and pearl earrings, holding bunches of grapes;
oil on canvas, signed and dated 'Nyulassy Sándor / 1874' (lower left), 63.5 x 49.4 cm.
Provenance:
Property from a European Private Collection.
Note:
The present work is a characteristic example of Nyulassy's dreamy, romantic portraits of female models, typically depicting mythological of allegorical figures, with this painting perhaps gesturing towards the fertility of spring and summer, especially in the sitter's pearl jewellery, and the abundance of grapes which she holds. A number of similar works are held in the collection of the Slovak National Gallery in Bratislava, including his portraits of young women with a bouquet of flowers [5974] and with a basket of fruit [5975].
