Sir Francis Grant, PRA, Scottish 1803-1878- Portrait sketch of the artist, standing full-length, in historical costume; oil on panel, faintly inscribed 'F Grant Esq / Squire to the Knight Marshal [?] / when George 4th went to Scotland / in 1822 / left to [?] LF Grant / by G E Grant' verso, 43.4 x 29.8 cm. Provenance: From the artist, thence by descent. Private Collection, UK. Note: Grant was one of the most prominent portraitists of 19th century Britain, with his sitters including Queen Victoria (1819-1901), Prince Albert (1819-1861), the Prince of Wales (1844-1900), Benjamin Disraeli (1804-1881), and Lord Palmerston (1784-1865), among many other notable figures of the time. The present sketch is a characteristically dramatic work by Grant, featuring the artist in a wild and windswept landscape, with his contrapposto stance, whilst theatrically dressed in historical costume, exuding confidence and authority.
