James Archer, RSA,
Scottish 1823-1904-
Portrait sketch of a young girl, seated, half-length, her blonde hair loose;
oil on board, feigned tondo, signed with monogram and dated '1867' (lower right), 24.7 x 23.1 cm.
Provenance:
By repute, the family of Frank Holl (1845-1888).
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Archer was best known for his romanticised depictions of literary and historical scenes, typically set in the dramatic landscape of his native Scotland. Children often feature in Archer's paintings, imbuing his compositions with a sense of innocence and sweetness which is particularly evident in his painting of a young girl and her dog which sold at Sotheby's, Perthshire, on 1 September 2004 (lot 623) for £48,000.
The present work is thought to have come from the family of Frank Holl, an artist who engraved a number of Archer's works, and the sitter was anecdotally believed to depict one of Holl's daughters.
