George Vicat Cole, RA, British 1833-1893- Wargrave; oil on canvas, signed with monogram and dated '18VC81' (lower left), 91.4 x 144.8 cm. Note: Like his father George Cole (1810-1883), Vicat Cole was best known for his production of landscapes, with his tranquil scenes of the English countryside proving particularly popular over the course of his lifetime and long after. His landscapes, which can be interpreted as celebrations of the quiet beauty of rural Britain, are in the collections of a number of galleries across the UK, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Manchester Art Gallery, and the National Gallery of Wales, with similar river views in the Government Art Collection [10644] and in the National Trust property of Anglesey Abbey [515604].
