Richard Henry Nibbs,
English 1816-1893-
Quayside scene with figures on a boat, and a windmill beyond;
oil on canvas, signed 'RHNibbs' and indistinctly dated (lower left), the bearing stamp for 'Barnard & Son, London' verso, 46 x 35.7 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Nibbs was a self-taught artist, having initially trained as a musician, working as a cellist in the orchestra of the Theatre Royal in his hometown of Brighton. Nibbs' oeuvre consisted almost entirely of marine scenes, depicting boats on the open seas and in quiet harbours off the south coast of Britain or in European towns. The present work is therefore typical of the artist's output, with the windmill in the distance suggesting a Dutch setting.
