James Lynwood Palmer, British 1867/68-1941- Portrait of a bay horse standing in a landscape; oil on canvas, signed and dated 'Lynwood Palmer / 1915' (lower right), bears label for 'C.M. May & Son' attached to the central stretcher bars, 71.5 x 76.6 cm. Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: Lynwood Palmer was a prominent equestrian painter, completing commissions for figures such as King George V (1865-1936), Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick (1861-1938), and William Cavendish-Bentinck, Duke of Portland (1857-1943). He emigrated to Canada in 1884, where he worked with horses on cattle ranches, as a hansom cab master, and as a show jumper. These experiences allowed Lynwood Palmer to develop a knowledge of and familiarity with horses which undoubtedly informed his portraits.
