William Watson, Jnr.,
British 1831-1921-
Highland cattle grazing in a mountain landscape;
oil on canvas, signed 'W. Watson R.S.A.' (lower left), 50.8 x 76.5 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work is accompanied by a photocopy of a letter of authentication from Dr Joanna Soden, Collections Curator at the Royal Scottish Academy.
Watson was from a family of artists, with his father, William Watson Snr. (1807-1871), and brothers Charles (1837-1900) and Robert Watson (1855-1920) all working as painters, as well as William Watson Jnr.'s own children. The present work is a classic example of Watson's output, which consisted almost exclusively of scenes of cattle and sheep serenely grazing in a mountainous Highland landscape. This painting recalls a work of similar dimensions which sold at Bonhams, Edinburgh, on 24 August 2007 (lot 1316, £3,400).
