Note:
Simonetti was friends with the artist Marià Fortuny (1838-1874), with the two artists sharing a studio for a period. The present work is typical of Simonetti's watercolours, depicting figures standing full-length in what appears to be somewhat imagined and elaborate historical dress, with similar examples held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York [87.15.71, 87.15.72, and 87.15.1].
