Note:
Despite being best known for his moonlit landscapes, Henry Pether produced a strikingly similar composition, depicting the same view of Chichester Cross, which is now in the collection of Chichester City Council [DJ100]. An almost identical painting to the present work by an unknown hand is also held in the collection of the Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead [TWCMS : G1157].
