After Diego Velázquez,
Spanish 1599-1660-
Detail from 'Philip IV hunting Wild Boar' (La Tela Real);
oil on canvas, signed with initials 'MP' (lower right), bears inscribed label attached to the reverse, 45.4 x 36 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Velázquez's 'Philip IV hunting Wild Boar' was probably painted around 1632-37, as a commission for the King’s hunting lodge, Torre de la Parada, on the outskirts of Madrid. The work is now in the collection of the National Gallery in London [NG197]. The present interpretation of Velázquez's renowned composition illustrates a detail from the central foreground of the painting, depicting three noblemen in rich costumes conversing, somewhat ignoring the spectacle of the hunt, whilst a mounted figure with a weapon rides past them in the background.
