Attributed to Walter Greaves,
British 1846-1930-
Family promenading along the Thames Embankment;
oil on canvas, 50.8 x 41 cm.
Provenance:
with the Carlyle Gallery, London, as Walter Greaves.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The setting of the Thames Embankment is absolutely typical of Greaves' output, with the artist clearly fascinated by the river Thames, upon which he worked as a boatman, rowing his friend and future teacher, James Abbott McNeill Whistler (1834-1903), along the river as the latter made sketches of his surroundings. Indeed, the present work somewhat recalls Greaves' painting of 'Walter Greaves and Alice Greaves on the Embankment' in the collection of the Tate [N04564], executed in the artist's slightly naïve style. The technique evident in the present work, with loose, undefined brushstrokes and thick impasto, is reminiscent of a landscape offered by Woolley & Wallis, Salisbury, on 12 August 2021 (lot 751).
