The present work is a typical example of Richir's contemplative and atmospheric figure studies, typically depicting individual women deep in thought. Richir enjoyed significant success as a portraitist in his time, completing commissions for King Albert I of Belgium (1875-1934) and his wife, Queen Elisabeth (1876-1965).
