John Young Hunter,
Scottish 1874-1955-
The Flamenco Dancer;
watercolour and bodycolour on paper, signed 'J Young Hunter' (lower left), 74 x 53 cm. ARR.
Provenance:
The Arthur Ackermann & Peter Johnson Collection.
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
John Young Hunter studied under John Singer Sargent (1856-1925) and Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) at the Royal Academy Schools. Young Hunter is best known for his Pre-Raphaelite influenced works, most notably his painting titled 'My Lady's Garden' which is held in the collection of the Tate [N01698]. The present work, on the other hand, which features a dancer clothed in a ruffled gown that seems to swish with the woman's movements, shows the impact of his teacher John Singer Sargent, whose own depictions of flamenco dancers are characterised by similarly elaborate costumes.
