John Cyril Harrison, British 1898-1985- A covey of grouse; pencil and watercolour heightened with white on paper, signed 'J.C. Harrison' (lower right), 41.7 x 56 cm. ARR. Provenance: with The Keyser Gallery at Farlow's, London. Private Collection, UK. Note: Harrison was a prolific painter of ornithological subjects, with his tendency to depict birds in flight imparting his works with a striking sense of movement and vitality. Harrison's works were often informed by his extensive travels, particularly his journeys to Scotland, where he regularly went with his friend, the naturalist Seton Gordon (1886-1977), in order to study golden eagles. Harrison's illustrations of these birds can be seen in Seton Gordon's 'Days with the Golden Eagle' of 1927.
