Eduard Emil August LEONHARDI (1826-1905), 'Das Rastplätzchen' / 'The resting place' Technique: oil on canvas, framed, Signature: signed 'Eduard Leonhardi' lower left, Dimensions: 53 x 73 cm, frame 64 x 85 cm, Condition: good, Comment: Leonhardi was a German landscape painter who is also known as the 'painter of the German forest'. After his training at the Dresden and Düsseldorf art academies, where he studied under Ludwig Richter among others, he became an extremely successful landscape painter during his lifetime. He also continued to run the ink factory founded by his father at a profit, which enabled him to do charitable work for the community of Loschwitz, where he lived: he donated a poorhouse and had a disused mill converted into an artists' house for young artists. The latter eventually became a museum for his own works. Today, the former mill still houses the 'Leonhardi Museum', a municipal gallery which, in keeping with Leonhardi's wishes, is now also dedicated to contemporary art alongside his works.
