Size: 26 x 17 cm
This Qadjar tile features a scene illustrating the famous tale of Leyla and Majnun. This ancient tale was widely disseminated throughout the Islamic world from the 12th century onwards, thanks to the poet Nizami, who put it into poetry in the third part of his Khamseh (or Quintet). This tile shows Majnun, exiled as an ascetic in the wilderness, surrounded by animals, against a cobalt background. The scene is framed by four negative floral spandrels on an eggplant ground, and bordered by a frieze of foliage.
