CARPIONI. Prophet. Sketch by Tintoretto. Drawings.
CARPIONI, Julius. Prophet. Sketch by Tintoretto. Drawings.1613 - 1678
Two drawings on a sheet of mm. 264x112. Sanguine with a brush. Ivory-colored laid paper with very slight diffused foxing. Signed Carpioni. Good condition.
Two drawings with characters outlined with great confidence. On the reverse an imposing prophet with watercolor that highlights the drapery of the robe; on the front a quick sketch in sanguine pencil, a study of a work by Tintoretto. Giulio Carpioni, Venice was a pupil of Padovanino who followed in Bergamo in 1631. Certainly precious for his training were the Veronese experiences of Turchi, Bassetti, Ottino, and also the style of Poussin learned through the engravings of Pietro Testa, examples by Fialetti and Simone Cantarini. Since 1636 he is documented in Vicenza where he will reside almost continuously, until his death. In the seventeenth century in Vicenza, Carpioni's style contrasted with the baroque style of Francesco Maffei: works by him appear in the museums of Vienna and Budapest, Bordeaux, Dijon, Florence, Padua, Ancona and Dresden.
